| The boys in yellow came out swinging and qualified 5th and 6th. That may not sound great but the top 5 cars beat the GT lap record previously set in 2010, and were also only separated by 0.238 seconds. As usual, the ALMS GT class showing that it is the best in the world.
At the drop of the green flag the Corvettes quickly moved up to 3rd and 4th, trailing the #55 BMW and #45 Porsche by inches. The #45 Porsche went on to take command of the race for a good portion with the two Corvettes matching it lap after lap. With about 1 hour left the #4 made a great pit stop and took the lead away from the #45.
With 20 minutes left in the race, the #3 Corvette (current points leader) was looking to finish strong, being in 3rd place with the #45 Porsche just ahead by a few car lengths. In the heat of battle the #3 made heavy contact with a GTC class Porsche and damaged the front driver-side suspension. The Corvette made it back to the pits and the team was able to fix it and get the car back out before the race ended, but the damage was done.
With about 10 minutes to go the #4 Corvette, while in the class lead, was ran into by a LMP2 car, damaging the front right corner. The #4 luckily escaped major damage and was able to keep racing without going into the pits, but the damage from the incident hurt the performance of the car. With a strong #45 Porsche teasing Oliver Gavin in the mirror, he had his work cut out for him. With 5 minutes left in the race Gavin was given a warning for blocking the #45......is this professional sports car racing or club racing? Gavin wasn't about to give away the victory that easily and put the hammer down and brought home the 3rd win for Corvette Racing in the 2012 ALMS season.
Next stop - Road America, but before we leave Mid-Ohio we bring you an interesting development. Veteren sports car driver Jeroen Bleekemolen was testing with Corvette Racing at Mid-Ohio earlier in the week prior to the race activities. More news on this development within the next few weeks. |
