2011 ALMS TV Same As Hidden Headlights
2011 ALMS TV Same As Hidden Headlights

Remember when the C6 came out and parts of CorvetteNation freaked out? "OMG, C6 Corvette doesn't have flip-up headlights! That sucks!"

But then, reactions morphed into, "Oh wait, that kinda looks cool." And finally turned to, "Hot sh*t! My vette looks just like the C6R race car. That's bad AND functionally cool!!"

Well IOO, the just announced ALMS Broadcast Package has 'hidden headlights' written all over it.

For the record, BBV is NOT a shill or a blind disciple of ALMS. We ARE fans of technology and badboy thinking. So here goes. There are a number of voices claiming the end of the world with this new ALMS Broadcast Package. More details found here.

But, here's what we think we read and interpret -

* The traditional TV model, as avail to ALMS, was NOT working.

* The world IS changing. Tech devices are making 'screen viewing' more than just watching TV
[See Kindle for example].

* Younger [and young-minded] audiences ARE tech-savvy and are adding other viewing mediums to their TV time [See YouTube and.....Jeez, every device @ CES and in your possession!].

* This new deal with ABC / ESPN adds many MORE hours of coverage time vs before.

* This new deal provides docu-dramas AND live coverage with re-broadcasts AND Video-on-Demand viewing of both.

* ESPN3 will be avail to any and all with a Broadband connection [ALMS will see to that, as evidenced by their on-going Press announcements. Already they've addressed Canada. And parking the live-stream on alms.com so that the few subscriber partnership limitations that ESPN3 has ....vs the MAJOR limitations of Speed2 access BTW.....are eliminated].

* ESPN3's partnership with XBox Live brings real racing and sim racing closer together [Maybe?].

* Broadband Broadcast and Video-on-Demand viewing ARE the future [Someone's gonna lead. Why not ALMS?].

* Connecting Broadband to your TV is easier than you think, if your equipment is relatively current [No, that old GE and rabbit ears won't cut it. But, even computer monitors are TV-like already.].

So, now on an ALMS race weekend you can watch live qualifying, the entire race live, the docu-drama, pre and post-race shows AND then watch it all again whenever you like.

That's what we think we are reading.
And like the whole headlights issue, at the end of the day, letting go of traditional thinking may work out after all. At least, we're willing to give it the benefit of a test drive in 2011.

What do you think?
