| With merely a few days of Sebring testing and today’s Qualifying completed, 2010 GT2 is already proving how competitive it will be. At one time or another, all the major players - BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, and Porsche have been at the top of the time sheets.
Porsche’s turn came when it counted. In Qualifying. But, only after the BMW failed its post-session Stall Test. ALMS / ACO rules say engine air may only pass through the restrictor. So, in Tech, a plug is inserted to starve air to the engine and force a shut-down. The BMW didn’t. So, more air than mandated was leaking into the intake…somehow. Acura got caught one year, but it was a broken part. Toyota got caught in Rallying long ago. THAT was cheating. No word on the BMW scenario. But, the Lizard and Falken P-cars are now the new GT2 front row.
You know a race is really serious, when you find no one is talking strategy / tactics before the race. So, without CR team insight, we’re taking an educated guess on the path to a Corvette win.
* It’s still unclear who really has the best race pace. Corvette’s have been running consistent times, Ferrari, too. Porsche seems a bit behind, but like BMW they both can find pace with soft tires for a few ‘magic laps’. For 12 hours? TBD.
* The C6R chassis seems fluid on the Sebring bumps. Not so the Porsches. BMW’s suspension is so exotically NOT a BMW M3-setup, that it’s bump mgt. will be fine. Ferrari does well here, too.
* Much of Corvette’s pre-season PR spoke to fuel efficiency engineering / technology for its GT2 car and 5.5L motor. No surprises if Sebring is won on fewer pit stops vs blow-away speed.
But, we’re just ‘guessing’. And that’s why we’ll all be watching and cheering the CR GT2 Sebring debut to a P1 / P2 finish.
