2016 Le Mans 24hrs: Race Info
May 25 2016 12:17:53 PM EST
The 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours may be one of the most important races for the GT ranks in a long time. Why? Ford is why. The entire reason for the new Ford GT's existence is to try to win Le Mans on the 50th anniversary of the historic GT40's win. They are so determined, that they are bringing four cars to increase their chances. The challengers from Corvette, Ferrari, Aston Martin, and Porsche are upping their game to try to prevent that from happening.

Ferrari, Ford's historic rival, lobbied to have US based Risi Compesizione invited to the race to increase their car count from the two full season WEC entries from AF Corse to three.

Porsche are in an in-between year before their new GTE car is debuted next year. Their 2015 car was upgraded to comply with the 2016 regulations, but the works WEC team has been put on hiatus until the new car is ready. Dempsey-Proton Racing are the sole GTE-Pro WEC entry, but the two Porsche North America entries from IMSA will also represent the brand.

Aston Martin Racing have downsized from three to two entries this year. They are also the only team to use Dunlop tires over Michelin.

Corvette will also be represented by the usual two entries. Due to last year's accident in practice that made the #63 unable to race, the team is bringing along a 3rd chassis as a backup just in case. Also, if either Corvette were to win, it would mark the 100th victory in the team's competitive history. What better place to make history then at Le Mans.
